When his second marriage fails, quickly followed by his mental health, Ian leaves behind his kids and his chequered past, to set off with his guilt and his camera, on a month-long bucket list adventure, in hope of bringing himself back from the brink. On My Way is a true story of one man’s journey, using the history of Bornean head hunter tribes, iconic Malaysian landmarks, encounters with wild animals, and exotic foods, as a therapy of distraction. He returned with a book full of memories the adventure seeker lurking in us all, might just appreciate reading.
After the initial shock, an eye to eye encounter with a shark proved less of a concern than high wire cable car rides across the Singapore skyline, a snake attack or the pain of a Bornean hand tap tattoo across his back. Witnessing deforestation at first hand, dodgy dorms, leaches, ants, spiders, child sized Monitor lizards, pissing monkeys, and a Japanese prison of war camp, was more than bearable, but being lucky enough to witness the everyday lives of Proboscis monkeys in their last natural habitat on earth, baby orangutans at play, flocks of flying fish and brain coral the size of VW beetles, was a privilege not everyone will lucky enough to experience in their lifetimes. Unless that is, you retrace the steps of this often misunderstood Yorkshire rouge.
